Purpose of the document
Since its establishment in 2018, TreeholeHK has grown to become a prominent voice in the psychological community of Hong Kong. This document serves as both a reflection on our journey and a manifesto for the future.
It acknowledges the challenges we've faced, including controversies that have sparked critical discourse about our practices and the broader field of psychology. Our aim is to transparently address these issues, learn from them, and pave the way for a more inclusive, ethical, impactful and innovation approach to psychological science in Hong Kong and beyond.
At the heart of our mission is the desire to redefine the role of psychology in society. Moving beyond traditional paradigms, we seek to create a psychology that is accessible, relevant, and empowering for all. In redefining our approach, we anchor our philosophy in the empirical rigor of psychological data while deeply valuing the richness of human experience over the traditional 'expert' model, towards a more egalitarian and data-driven framework.
By prioritising empirical evidence and individual narratives, we aim to transcend the conventional power structures of psychology, fostering a discipline that is not only scientifically robust but also profoundly resonant with the intricacies of personal and communal life in Hong Kong.
As we embark on this renewed journey, our focus is clear: to bridge the gap between psychological science and the everyday lives of people.
We are committed to transforming psychology from a field of study into a living practice that resonates with and enriches the lives of individuals and communities alike.
The following sections outline our perspective on the current state of psychology and the determined actions we plan to undertake. We hope this document serves as a guide rail internally for our team and as a catalyst for broader discussion within the field.
Open Access Data and Statistical Methods
The replicability crisis in psychology underscores the urgent need for a culture of open science within the field. Issues like p-hacking, where researchers selectively report results or cherry-pick statistical methods to find significant outcomes, have raised serious concerns about the credibility and reliability of psychological research. This practice of manipulating data analysis until desired results are achieved undermines the integrity of scientific findings. Addressing this crisis calls for greater transparency in research processes and a commitment to replicable study designs and analyses, fostering an environment where open sharing of methods and data becomes the norm.
Context and Sample
In addition, the context in which psychological research is conducted is critical. There's a common critique that psychology has often become the study of the behaviors and attitudes of a narrow demographic: primarily white college students, who constitute a majority of research participants. This limited sample fails to represent the diverse range of human experiences and contexts, leading to findings that may not be generalizable to broader populations. To overcome this limitation, psychology must expand its research scope to encompass more varied and real-life contexts. Methods like real-time tracking and Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) offer promising avenues for collecting data from individuals in their natural environments, capturing a more authentic range of human experiences. By integrating these approaches, psychological research can become more relevant and applicable to everyday life, ensuring that findings are reflective of the diverse and dynamic nature of human behavior.
Research-to-Market Barrier
In the field of psychology, there are significant challenges in translating research findings into practical, marketable solutions. Many psychological theories and research studies, despite their potential, remain largely academic and fail to be commercialised. This gap between research and market not only prevents these insights from reaching their full potential but also limits the opportunity for market validation, which could be a crucial aspect of refining and testing psychological theories. The application of research in real-world settings can provide valuable feedback, enhancing the relevance and efficacy of psychological concepts.
Expert-led and Top-Down Approach: Practical and Ideological Considerations
Furthermore, the prevailing model of psychological services is often criticized for its cost-ineffectiveness and its underlying implication of a pathological approach. Instead of being viewed as a resource only in times of distress, psychology should be a tool for empowerment, enhancing individual psychic development and fostering the courage to pursue meaningful goals. The current system, driven by high costs and a expert-led, crisis-oriented approach, restricts access to psychological support, reinforcing the idea that such services are extraordinary measures rather than integral tools for personal growth and exploration. This perspective needs a shift, recognising psychology not just as a means to address mental health issues, but as a proactive enabler for individuals to explore and realise their potential, aspirations, and values.
